An illustrated sapphic beaver sits, blowing colourful bubbles, and wears heart-shaped sunglasses. She has painted nails, and on one hand, two of her nails are shorter than the others.

At Positive Space, therapy is rooted in community, not conformity.

When we went through our rebrand, we wanted a way to represent the diversity of our community of clients and therapists.

To create the Forest Friends, each of our team members worked with illustrator King Freddie to provide input on their design. We are so excited to share these illustrations with you, and most of all, we hope you see glimpses of yourself in them.

The Beaver was inspired by PSC Therapist, Sara Knight [she/her]

In this blog post, Sara shares more of the Beaver's story and the symbols she wanted included in the illustration:

I chose a beaver because they're often jokingly associated with queer culture, especially in lesbian communities, where "beaver" has been used as a tongue-in-cheek reference and reclaimed with humour.

She feels playful and a little cheeky, but beyond that, beavers are builders. They create spaces that support themselves and others, which feels connected to the work I do and the life I live.

At the same time, my beaver isn't a traditional beaver; she's wearing her heart-shaped sunglasses, has a mixed manicure, and is blowing bubbles. That combination feels meaningful to me because I've spent much of my life being the person who gets things done, and I'm learning that joy, softness, and self-expression are just as important as productivity.

I hope my beaver invites people to embrace the parts of themselves that are quirky, playful, unconventional, and authentic. Those parts are often where creativity, resilience, and connection live. Many of us spend years trying to fit into roles, expectations, or identities that don't fully reflect who we are.

We can be builders and dreamers, practical and playful, strong and tender.

Creating space for that complexity is important because healing often begins when we stop trying to perform who we think we should be and start exploring who we actually are.
